The Weight Loss Pills That Work

Weight Loss Pills

In today’s world, many different weight loss pills are advertised to help achieve weight loss goals. Before I tell you about the different types of weight loss pills that are available by prescription that have shown to be effective, let me tell you that there is no magic pill to help you lose weight. ubuntu server . the domain Weight loss pills are only as good as the dedication that you put into losing weight.

In order to lose weight, it is very important that you follow a healthy lifestyle and make appropriate lifestyle modifications to lose weight. This includes eating a healthy diet and exercising to keep a healthy cardiovascular system.  Once you have committed yourself to a healthy weight loss program and lifestyle, weight loss pills can be helpful.  I generally prescribe them to patients who have proven to be committed and dedicated, after several weeks of guiding them through a healthy lifestyle.

I usually avoid prescribing medications on the first encounter because patients get a false sense of security that a pill is going to help them lose weight without having to put in adequate effort.  I follow my patients for several weeks before I decide whether a weight loss pill would be appropriate. Generally, my patients lose about 10% of their body weight before I start a pill. Andriessenova domain whois .  That way, I know they have made lifestyle changes necessary for the weight loss and will use the pill as an adjunct to their program.

Also, keep in mind that your basal metabolic rate and metabolism changes after a significant amount of weight loss (approximately 10% of your body weight).  Therefore, a weight loss pill could be very beneficial at that point in time.  There are several different pills on the market that have shown in randomized trials to work well, which include Contrave, Belviq, Phentermine, and Qsymia.  On average, most patients lose up to 3 to10% of their body weight, compared to sugar pills or dummy pills.

Let’s talk about the first pill for a moment.  Contrave is a combination medication, which consists of Naltrexone and Bupropion Hydrochloride.  Contrave is designed to help patients with an addictive personality or a certain type of addition to certain foods.  Naltrexone antagonizes various opioid receptors in the brain, whereas Bupropion inhibits neuronal uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, which help control your appetite.  Again, this medicine has shown in clinical trials to be effective in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle.

The second medication I would like to talk to you about is Belviq.  Belviq selectively activates a certain type of receptors in the brain called the 5-HT2C receptors, and it promotes satiety.  It is a selective serotonin agonist and in clinical trials has shown to be very effective in weight loss, along with lifestyle modifications.  Belviq tends to be expensive and not covered by most insurance companies; therefore, I tend not to use this medication as the first line therapy.  Nevertheless, at times it is a very helpful weight loss adjunct.

The third medicine I would like to discuss today is Phentermine.  This drug has been around for a while and it has been a very commonly prescribed medication due to its affordability.  It comes in generic and is therefore quite inexpensive.  Phentermine stimulates the central nervous system activity and acts as an appetite suppressant.  This is a safe medicine; however, if you have heart problems, your physician should very carefully monitor you as this medicine can cause tachycardia or a rapid heart rate and palpitations.  It can also cause dry mouth, anxiety, and insomnia.

The next medication I would like to discuss with you is Qsymia, a combination medication that consists of Phentermine Hydrochloride and Topiramate.  As you can see, Qsymia contains Phentermine, the mechanism of action of which I previously discussed.  This medicine is combined with Topiramate, which blocks sodium channels and augments the activity of GABA activity, antagonizes glutamate receptors, and inhibits carbonic anhydrates.  This medicine was studied originally for seizure disorder but at low doses can be very helpful in weight loss.  An incidental observation was made that once various patients used this medicine, they would tend to lose weight.  Therefore, this drug was evaluated as a weight loss agent.  It generally changes your taste buds where, for example, you do not desire foods that you would normally crave.  Again, in combination with Phentermine it is an effective medicine and has shown in studies to be more effective than Phentermine alone, but that is in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle.

In conclusion, if you are ready to lose weight, start a good, healthy lifestyle.  Once you have improved your lifestyle and observed some results in your weight loss program, I suggest getting some help with a medication that is most suitable for you.  It can help aid in the weight loss and perhaps achieve greater results than without medication.
